AGA Cleaning Explained: What's Involved and What It Costs
An AGA is part cooker, part heater and part family heirloom. It sits in the middle of the kitchen, and you use it daily. As a result, it collects soot, grease and spills in places that a cloth never reaches.
This guide explains what a professional AGA or Rayburn clean involves, how long it takes and what it costs. It is written for owners who love their cooker and want it treated with care. Our full AGA and Rayburn cleaning page has the short version.
Why an AGA is not an ordinary oven
A standard oven heats up when you switch it on. An AGA works differently, because it stores heat in thick cast iron and releases it slowly. The hotplates, the lids and the oven doors are heavy, and the finishes are expensive.
That design brings two cleaning challenges. First, carbon builds up inside the ovens and on the inside of the lids, where it bakes hard over the years. Second, the enamel outside can chip or dull if the wrong product meets it.
For these reasons, a spray-and-scrub approach does not suit an AGA. We use enamel-safe, non-abrasive products and work slowly around the finish. Our post on eco and caustic cleaners explains why harsh alkalis are a poor match for these surfaces.
What we clean
We cover the parts you can see and the parts you cannot. Each job follows the same order, so we miss nothing.
- The oven compartments, including roasting and baking ovens
- Shelves, grid shelves and trays
- The hotplate lids, insulating covers and the hotplates beneath
- Door linings and seals
- Chrome rails, handles and trim, polished at the end
- The enamel front and top, wiped and finished
We take out the removable parts and soak them. We clean the fixed surfaces in place, using gentle products and careful hand work. Then we refit the parts and check that each lid and door closes properly.
How long it takes
Plan on three to four hours for most AGAs and Rayburns. A two-oven model is at the shorter end. Three-oven and four-oven models take longer, since there are more compartments and more parts to treat.
We arrange the visit around how your cooker runs, because models differ. Some owners keep their AGA on all the time, while others switch it off for part of the year. Tell us your model and fuel in the quote form, because that helps us plan the time and the order of work.
If you have not cleaned the cooker for years, the job takes more effort. Even so, we confirm a fixed price before we start. You will not get a different figure on the day.
What it costs
AGA and Rayburn cleaning starts from £100. The figure depends on the model and the number of ovens, and we confirm it in writing before the visit. A hob add-on is £20 and an extractor add-on is £20, if you want us to do those on the same trip.
For comparison, a single oven costs £50 and a double oven costs £60. The AGA price is higher because the job takes longer and needs specialist methods. You can read a full breakdown in our oven cleaning price guide.
Some customers book the AGA clean together with the kitchen oven or the extractor, since that saves a second visit. It also means one tidy-up and one set of covers laid out.
How often to book
Most AGA owners wipe the outside weekly and book a professional clean once a year. However, heavy cooks or large households may prefer a clean every six months. The right gap depends on how much you cook and how much grease the cooker sees.
Watch for the signs. Smoke from the ovens, a dull or sticky lid, and food that cooks unevenly all point to carbon build-up. Our post on the signs your oven needs a professional clean lists seven things to check, and most apply to an AGA too.
Is it worth paying for?
An AGA is a major purchase, and a professional clean helps protect it. While a careful clean keeps the enamel bright and the ovens working evenly, a careless one can scratch the finish or leave residue.
Our general answer on value is in is professional oven cleaning worth it. For an AGA, the case is stronger because more is at stake. The risk of a bad DIY attempt is higher too.
We do not promise lower bills from a clean cooker. Our guide on whether a clean oven saves energy says what we can and cannot promise.
Looking after it between cleans
A little routine care makes the next professional visit easier. Wipe the enamel with a soft, damp cloth once the surface has cooled. Brush crumbs from the oven floors, and keep the lids down while the hotplates sit idle.
Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays on the enamel. If you spill something sugary on a hot surface, let it cool, then lift it gently. Sugar and acid can mark enamel if left alone.
Do not forget the work surfaces around the cooker. Our guide on how to clean each type of hob is useful for the work surfaces nearby.
AGAs and range cookers compared
An AGA is a type of range cooker, but not all range cookers are AGAs. A Rangemaster or Stoves cooker has separate ovens, a gas or electric hob and a grill. However, it does not store heat in the same way.
If you own one of those, see our range cooker cleaning page. Prices start from £90. We cover everyday ovens in our oven cleaning service.
Where we clean AGAs
AGAs turn up in larger family homes and older properties, so we visit them across our patch. That includes oven cleaning in Bishopbriggs, oven cleaning in Kirkintilloch and oven cleaning in Clydebank.
Some suburbs north and south of the city see more AGA bookings, so each has its own page. For example, see AGA cleaning in Bearsden, AGA cleaning in Milngavie and AGA cleaning in Newton Mearns.
If your home is nearby but not on the list, ask us anyway. We cover Glasgow and the surrounding areas, and we will say plainly if a visit is out of reach.
