What an AGA clean covers

An AGA or Rayburn is a cast-iron cooker with an enamel finish. These cookers run for years, and carbon builds up inside the ovens. The lids and hotplates collect splashes too. A specialist clean brings the whole cooker back.

We clean the oven compartments, the roasting and baking ovens and the warming oven. We clean the hotplate lids and the plates beneath them. We also clean the door seals, the chrome rails and the outer enamel. We take the same care with each part.

Our process for an AGA

We start by covering the floor and the nearby surfaces. Then we lift out the removable parts, such as oven shelves, grill racks and trays. These soak in our heated tank. Meanwhile, we clean the oven linings by hand, using soft tools.

The finish is the main risk. Wire wool or a harsh spray can scratch enamel for good. Therefore we use only non-abrasive, enamel-safe products. We work in small areas and wipe each one dry before moving on.

Finally, we polish the chrome and the lids and refit all parts. We check that the doors close well and the seals sit flat. You then see the result before we leave. The AGA looks like itself again, only cleaner.

What affects time and price

AGA and Rayburn cleaning starts from £100. A two-oven model costs less to clean than a four-oven one. The state of the ovens also counts. Years of carbon take more time than a cooker cleaned last year.

Caring for your AGA between visits

Light care makes each deep clean easier. Wipe the lids and top plate when the cooker is cool, because dried spills are harder to lift. Use a soft cloth and a mild cleaner. However, avoid abrasive pads, since they scratch enamel.

Inside the ovens, brush out loose crumbs with a soft brush. Do not spray cleaner into the oven linings, because the cast iron holds heat and moisture. Specifically, never use caustic oven spray on an AGA. It can mark the finish and leave a residue that burns on later.

Still, carbon builds up in time, even with good care. Therefore a professional clean now and then keeps the ovens in good shape. Many owners find a clean cooker easier to live with.
