How Dip-Tank Oven Cleaning Works

If you have never watched a professional oven clean, it can seem like magic. You leave a blackened oven in the morning and come back to one that gleams. There is no magic involved, because the result comes from a sensible order of work.

This post walks you through a visit from start to finish. It covers the dip tank, the work inside the oven and what we do before we leave. The whole job is part of our oven cleaning service.

What a dip tank is

A dip tank is a deep container of warm, mild cleaning solution. We lower the racks, trays and other loose parts into it and leave them to soak. Heat and time loosen the baked-on grease, so we do not need to scrub hard.

The tank does the slow work that would take you hours at a sink. A rack coated in carbon often comes out much cleaner after a long soak, and we then finish it by hand.

We bring the tank to your home. Because nothing leaves the property, you never wonder where your racks have gone.

Step 1: Protect the kitchen

Each visit begins with covers. We lay protective sheets over the floor and work surfaces near the oven, then set up the tank where it will not get in your way. A good clean should leave no trace on the rest of the kitchen, and the covers make sure of that.

We also check the oven and the area around it. If we see loose fittings or damaged seals, we tell you before we start. As a result, you can ask questions early.

Then we confirm the price you agreed in advance. A single oven is £50 and a double oven is £60, with no extras added on the day.

Step 2: Remove the loose parts

Next, we take out the racks, trays and any panels that come away easily. Many modern ovens have removable side runners and fan covers, which saves awkward reaching. We follow the maker’s design, and we never force anything.

Door glass needs a little more care. On many ovens the door comes apart in stages, so we can reach the space between the panes. We take apart only what the design allows, and we put it back in the right order.

Once the loose parts are out, the oven cavity is empty. Because of that, we can work freely inside it, and we reach every corner.

Step 3: The soak

The racks and trays go into the tank. While they soak, we turn to the oven itself. This is how two hours of work fits into one visit, since the tank works in the background.

Smaller parts, such as knobs and trim, need less time. Larger items, such as grill pans, take longer. We check each one and move it on when it is ready.

A heated soak is gentler on the metal than hard scrubbing, and that is one reason we choose it. Abrasive pads can scratch racks and leave them harder to clean next time.

Step 4: Clean the cavity

Inside the oven, we apply our non-caustic cleaner to the walls, floor, roof and door. We give it time to work, and then we lift the softened grease and carbon with cloths and soft tools. Fans, elements and seals get special attention.

Because the products are non-caustic, we can work in your kitchen without harsh fumes. If you want the background, read our comparison of eco and caustic cleaners. It explains the difference in plain terms.

Burnt-on carbon takes the most patience. We work in layers rather than rushing, so we do not damage the enamel. If a mark will not shift, we say so.

Step 5: Rinse, dry and refit

Once the racks are clean, we rinse and dry them. We then clean the door glass, inside and out, until it is clear. Everything goes back in its place.

We run a final check on three things: the door, the racks and the glass. The door must close properly, the racks must slide freely and the glass must be free of streaks. We fix anything that falls short.

Finally, we wipe down the outside of the oven, the handle and the controls. You touch these parts most, so we leave them clean and dry.

Step 6: Tidy up and hand over

We remove the covers and pack up the tank. We wipe any splashes from the floor and surfaces, and we take our rubbish with us. However big the job, you should find the kitchen as tidy as before.

Before we leave, we show you the result and explain any marks that remain. We also tell you how soon you can cook. Since our method is non-caustic and fume-free, that is straight away.

Bigger jobs: range cookers and extractors

The same method scales up. A range cooker has more cavities and a hotplate, so the process takes longer. Our range cooker cleaning usually takes three to four hours, and the price starts from £90.

Extractor hoods use the dip tank too, because metal filters soak well. We degrease the housing by hand. See our extractor fan cleaning page for details. The add-on costs £20.

We clean hobs by hand, since the method depends on the type. Our guide to cleaning each type of hob explains why.

Does dip-tank cleaning suit all ovens?

Most ovens suit it well. However, a few have parts that should not soak, such as certain coated or painted pieces. We check before we dip, and we clean those by hand.

Getting ready for the visit

You do not need to do much. Clear the worktop beside the oven, and remove any food or foil from inside. Make sure we can reach the oven, and keep pets in another room while we work.

We will share a fuller list in our guide to preparing for your oven cleaning appointment. Because it is short, it will help you get ready in minutes.

Where we use this method

We use the same process everywhere we work. That includes oven cleaning in Cumbernauld, oven cleaning in Glasgow West End and oven cleaning in Glasgow Southside. Tell us your postcode and we will suggest the nearest available day.
